Nineteen fourteen age twenty four
a handsome young man
signs up for the war
he tells his beloved sweetheart
he'll be ack soon

what he doesnt anticipate
is the battle of somme
July nineteen sixteen, age twenty six
fifty eight thousand british troops
are broken like sticks

drowning in chlorine gas
writhing in pain
this is serious now
this is no fools game

as he advances towards the wire
fellow soldiers drop all around
never to get up again
the sounds of bullets flying past
bombs going off, screams of agony

hundreds gone in one blast
face in the mud
poppies soon take their place

nineteen thirty six, twenty years dead
thousands of soldiers lost
thousands of addicts found
was it worth it?
